Alex Ferguson says there are plans in place to improve his Manchester United squad this summer.
Speaking prior to his side’s Premier League clash with Chelsea, the Scot said preparation had been ongoing for some time as to which players are likely to arrive at Old Trafford ahead of next season.
With Wilfried Zaha already agreeing to join and a host of young players already bedded in at the club, Ferguson hinted that just one or two other players will join in the summer.
“We’ve been doing that [planning for next season] for a while,” Ferguson said.
“Your scouting goes on for
the full season, actually sometimes two seasons when you maybe monitor a
younger player. You want to see how he does the next season. That is
the process we go through. We’ve got some ideas where we’re going and
hopefully we can conclude them.
“We’ll look at one or two bodies
to come in. You’ve got to remember there are a lot of young players we
expect to improve and take that into consideration. And you have to
consider ages of players and protect that part. In the main, we’re know
where we are. We’re comfortable.”
Ferguson also said he wanted to avoid a situation where there were too many players requiring regular football, noting that it is a situation he has had to deal with this season.
“We have fantastic strength in depth,” he said.
“That’s the area where we don’t want
to confuse ourselves because you end up with too many players and
trying to keep them all happy. It’s happened a few times this season.”
A host of names have been linked with a move to Old Trafford, including Borussia Dortmund pair Ilkay Gundogan and Robert Lewandowski.
