THE latest round of Premier League action saw Manchester United crowned champions with a 3-0 victory over strugglers Aston Villa.
Meanwhile, Tottenham pulled off a great comeback against Manchester City to win 3-1. Over at Anfield, Liverpool drew 2-2 with Chelsea while Arsenal got all three points away against Fulham with a 1-0 win.
SunSport’s Jim Munro had a solid week scoring 6 points with 6 correct outcomes and no exact scores.
However, this week’s winner of Beat the Boss bragging rights is Chey Dakota with 15 points.
Reckon you can be the next prediction wizard?
The rules are simple: the winner is the person with the highest prediction score. One point is won by predicting the correct outcome, while three points will be awarded for a correct score.
However, if the scores are still tied after this has been calculated, the victory will go to the user who posted their predictions first. If you post more than one entry, only your most recent one will be counted.
Man City v West Ham. JM says 3-1
Man City have missed out on the title while West Ham have more or less quashed any lingering relegation fears. The most significant thing here is the planned applause on the 23rd minute in memory of Marc-Vivien Foe. It is 10 years since Foe collapsed and died while on international duty and having served both clubs with distinction, both sets of supporters have arranged to pay their own mark of respect for the Cameroon colossus.
Everton v Fulham. JM says 2-0
Everton’s defeat at Sunderland was a body blow, putting to an end their hopes of muscling in on Champions League qualification. They are unbeaten in their last six games with Fulham and have never lost a home game to the Londoners, winning 20 and drawing four of the 24 played.
Southampton v West Brom. JM says 2-2
These two just can’t bear to be parted. Five of their last seven meetings have ended up as stalemates, so let’s not buck that trend, eh? This isn’t just a recent phenomenon either. In their 59 previous League encounters, the Saints have won 20 as have West Brom, with 19 draws.
Stoke v Norwich. JM says 1-0
These two will be a little more relaxed after vital wins last weekend against Championship-bound clubs. Stoke’s victory at QPR was just their second in 15 Prem games while Norwich are now 13th following their win over bottom club Reading. The Canaries have picked up just one away win from 17 matches so far this season.
Wigan v Tottenham. JM says 2-1
It’s surely too big an ask for FA Cup finalists Wigan to claw themselves to safety for yet another season. But a win here would take them out of the relegation zone on goal difference, if only for 48 hours. Spurs won’t want to waste those three vital points snatched from Man City last weekend by losing here – and striker Jermain Defoe has good reason to look forward to this one. He has bagged 10 career goals against the Latics, including five in the 9-1 drubbing dished out at White Hart Lane in November 2009.
Newcastle v Liverpool. JM says 1-1
The Toon are making a few nervous glances over their shoulder but safety should be secure of they could chisel out another three points from four remaining games. Liverpool’s target is neighbours Everton, one place and five points ahead of them in the table. Steven Gerrard hasn’t missed a minute of Premier League action for his beloved Reds this season, is two goals short of his 100th Prem strike and has previously netted seven against the hosts. Money on for first goalscorer?
Reading v QPR. JM says 1-2
More of a wake. Ten points adrift with just 12 available to each of them, the result here will be meaningless if Aston Villa beat Sunderland at home on Monday evening.
Chelsea v Swansea. JM says 3-0
Chelsea have a score to settle with the visitors after the Swans won 2-0 at the Bridge in the Capital Cup semi-final first leg in January. This will be Rafa Benitez’s 250th match as a Premier League manager but more significantly it should be Frank Lampard’s 400th Prem appearance for the club. Just two goals shy of Bobby Tambling’s all-time record of 202, Lampard has every Chelsea fan willing him on to carve his own slice of history.
Arsenal v Man Utd. JM says 2-1
The Gunners are to form a guard of honour to welcome the new Premier League champions, but don’t expect there to be too much polite applause from the stands when former fans’ favourite Robin van Persie enters that tunnel of love. At the risk of sounding like Madame Zaza at a village fete, I can see Man United taking an early lead but Arsenal hitting back with two quick, late goals. A win is due. The Gunners have lost nine of their last 11 matches with Fergie’s men in all competitions.
Aston Villa v Sunderland. JM says 1-0
The challenge for Villa is clear. A win here would put them beyond the clutches of Reading and QPR who are already preparing their goodbyes to the Premier League. But Wigan are hot on the Villa’s tail and a win for the Latics over Spurs on Saturday would dump Paul Lambert’s team into that final relegation spot on goal difference. Another incentive for avoiding defeat is they are one short of matching their worst record of 17 Prem losses set in 2002-03. Most useless stat of the weekend? Sunderland haven’t won any of their last 16 Prem games played on a Monday.
